Love pastries and foods from the grocery store but don't know what to do with all those left-over plastic containers? If you're an avid gardener or just starting out, here are some tips to reuse those containers to grow plants.
Steps
1. Find an empty container and make sure it is very clean. You may need to soak it to remove the food particles.
2. Poke holes in the bottom for drainage. Use a sharp tool to avoid splitting the plastic. If you are trying hydroponic methods you should look for a sturdy plastic container that is free of cracks and holes.
3. Fill with potting soil or another planting medium.
4. Plant your seeds and water as necessary. You can also use these for sprouting and cultivating more plants from larger plants.
5. Utilize the attached lid on some items. You can close the lid and generate a mini-greenhouse effect, or use it as a plant plate to collect water.
6. Transfer your sprouts to sturdier containers after they have established roots and matured, unless they are a smaller species of plant and you don't mind the look of the plastic container.
Tips
* If your pastry came in a container with a separate lid, you can use the lid as a plant tray.
* Clear containers are best as they will let in light.
* Use extra lids and containers and plant plates. Put your regular pots on the disposable plastic containers to collect extra water.
* Consider decorating the plastic trays with buttons, stones, or other embellishments. You can plan a rainy day activity for children. Help them and attach the decorations with a hot glue gun.
Warnings
* Don't put containers on surfaces where leaks can cause damage. Plastic containers may break or crack and the water can damage wood or other delicate surfaces.
Things You'll Need
* Clean plastic containers
* Potting soil or other planting medium
* Fertilizer (optional)
* Water
* Sunny area if needed for your particular plants
* Safe area to store your plants
